Citizens Financial Group boosted its profit in the second quarter as climbing fees and interest income outpaced a rise in costs.

The bank reported a profit of $587 million, or $1.30 a share, compared with $436 million, or 92 cents a share, in the same quarter a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet had been forecasting $1.24 a share.

Revenue jumped 12% to $2.28 billion, ahead of analyst estimates for $2.25 billion.

Net interest income was up 14% at $1.63 billion, thanks to a higher net interest margin and a 5% jump in average interest-earning assets. Noninterest income gained 9% to $652 million on higher cash-management fees, capital market fees and wealth fees.

The company's noninterest expense meanwhile rose just 6%, driven by new hires, increased compensation and outside services costs.
