Market Chatter: Thailand to Introduce Higher Electricity Tariffs for Data Centers

Thailand will introduce a separate electricity tariff category for data centers, requiring them to pay a higher rate, according to a Bloomberg Report on Wednesday.

The move aims to prevent surging power demand from AI and cloud computing from raising household bills, the report said.

Higher revenues from data centers will be used to pay for public electricity costs such as streetlights, the report added, citing Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee.

The plan comes as the country looks to attract billions of dollars in AI infrastructure and hyperscale data center investments, the report noted.
