An Aecon-led consortium has landed a 815 million Canadian dollar (US$580 million) contract for work on the largest and oldest wastewater-treatment facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Canadian construction company said Friday that the Red River Biosolids Partners consortium was handed the contract by the city of Winnipeg for the North End Water Pollution Control Centre sewage treatment plant upgrade and the biosolids facilities design and build project.

The consortium, which includes the Canadian arm of Southland Holdings and MWH Constructors Canada has completed the development phase, during which they pushed ahead with design and cost work for the project. Stantec is providing design services.

The construction phase will now begin to deliver new biosolids facilities and modifications to the existing facilities, Aecon said. Upgraded facilities operations are expected to begin in the last quarter of 2030, with final construction expected to be finished in the second quarter of 2031.

Each partner holds a 33.3% interest in Red River Biosolids Partners. Aecon said its share of the contract value will be added to its construction segment backlog in the third quarter of this year.
