Intuitive Surgical logged higher profit in its second quarter, as sales increased.

The maker of robotic surgery systems on Thursday posted net income of $818.1 million, or $2.29 a share, compared with $658.4 million, or $1.81 a share, a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings were $2.80 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $2.51 a share.

Revenue rose 19% to $2.89 billion, compared with analyst expectations for $2.82 billion. The increase in sales was driven by growth in procedure volume, higher da Vinci system leasing revenue and an increase in the installed base of da Vinci and Ion systems, the company said.

Intuitive forecast worldwide da Vinci procedure growth of approximately between 14% and 15%.

The company placed 468 da Vinci surgical systems compared with 395 a year before.

Competition in the surgical robots market continues to ramp up. Stryker launched its Mako robotic power system for total knee replacement procedures in the U.S. commercially earlier Thursday. Medtronic is seeking U.S. regulatory approval to expand the uses of its Hugo robotic-assisted survey system to include general surgery and gynecologic procedures.
