The U.S. Federal Communications Commission adopted rules to prohibit the authorization of devices containing certain logic-bearing hardware components made by companies deemed to pose national security threats, according to a Wednesday FCC press release.

The FCC's action will "fully close the component part loophole," Chair Brendan Carr said.

Since 2022, new equipment manufactured by entities on the FCC's covered list, such as Huawei and ZTE (HKG:0763, SHE:000063), has been barred from obtaining equipment authorization. However, devices containing parts from covered list entities could still enter the U.S. market, Carr said in a separate statement.

The FCC keeps a list of companies whose communications equipment and services are prohibited due to national security concerns.

Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
