Saab, Embraer Eye Expansion of Gripen Fighter Jet Production in Brazil

STOCKHOLM--Saab and Embraer signed an agreement for the potential production of 20 additional Gripen fighter jets at the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer's Gaviao Peixoto site.

The new aircraft would be in addition to the 15 jets that are already contracted for production at the plant as part of a Brazilian air force order.

Brazil ordered 36 of the jets in a 2014 deal with the Swedish defense company that included an agreement to produce certain variants of the aircraft at Gaviao Peixoto. The first Gripen produced in Brazil was unveiled earlier this year.

Under the framework agreement outlined late Tuesday, Embraer would take responsibility for assembling the new aircraft, complementing Saab's final assembly line in Sweden to meet global demand for the Swedish fighter.

The move secures additional capacity for future business opportunities, said Micael Johansson, chief executive of Saab.

The two companies intend to conclude the agreement this year.
