Johnson & Johnson said a late-stage trial of its treatment for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma showed positive results, reducing the risk of disease progression and death.

J&J on Thursday said the treatment--a combination of the drugs Tecvayli and Talvey--demonstrated statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in progression-free survival and overall survival.

With the treatment, the risk of disease progression or death was reduced by 89%, J&J said. The study included adult patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, who had previously received between one and four lines of therapy.

The overall safety profiles for the combined treatments were consistent with the known safety profiles of each treatment individually, according to J&J.

"These findings further reinforce immunotherapy as a cornerstone of multiple myeloma care and strengthen the growing body of evidence supporting our leadership in this space," said Yusri Elsayed, global therapeutic area head of oncology at J&J. "By continuing to expand treatment options across the disease continuum, we are moving closer to our ambition of one day curing this disease."
