Boeing (BA) has asked the US government to seek greater transparency from the European Union over a 3 billion euro ($3.43 billion) loan package for Airbus, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a letter to the US Trade Representative.

Boeing asked US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to seek a full accounting of the loan's terms and explain how the financing complies with the 2021 truce agreement's transparency requirements, the report said.

The European Investment Bank told Reuters the financing was a standard interest-bearing loan and did not represent unusual support for Airbus.

A European Commission spokesperson told MT Newswires in an e-mail statement, "The loan is unrelated to the agreed extension of the LCA truce, and should not affect that extension."

"The European Investment Bank and Airbus have signed a 1 billion euro loan to support research and development in the European aerospace sector, part of a 3 billion euro envelope tailored to support innovation. This funding is granted by the EIB under the so-called Article 19 EIB loan mechanism and is not a subsidy. This repayable loan was provided on market-terms; it is not a grant or other form of financial assistance that would amount to a subsidy," the spokesperson said.

"This funding is fully in line with the LCA Understanding reached between the EU and US in 2021, whereby each side agreed to provide any financing to its LCA producer for the production or development of large civil aircraft on market terms," the spokesperson added.

Boeing and Airbus did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
