Snap-On logged a bigger profit in the second quarter as growth on the top line outpaced its costs.

The maker of high-end tools and equipment posted a profit of $260.6 million, or $4.96 a share, compared with $250.3 million, or $4.72 a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

The per-share earnings total beat analyst projections by a penny, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 4.1% to $1.33 billion, ahead of analyst projections for $1.22 billion.

Net sales were up 4.7% at $1.24 billion, with a 3% organic jump, another $11.5 million in sales tied to an acquisition and some favorable foreign currency translation. The company's financial services unit, Snap-on Credit, recorded a small decline in revenue.
