Corning CEO Sees Optical Scale-Up, Passive Photonics Powering Next Growth Wave

0927 ET - Corning is positioning itself to capture expanding AI data center demand. CEO Wendell Weeks says on an analyst call that as AI clusters exceed 130,000 GPUs, network architectures require a third optical layer, yielding "50% more content per GPU for very large clusters." What's more, as bandwidth scales, optical content in enterprise is projected to increase "1.3x to 1.5x per GPU by 2028." The shift from copper to optical scale-up offers a tailwind as well, Weeks says, where a fully optical setup translates to "160 fibers per GPU, which is ten times the amount" of current scale-out networks. Beyond cable infrastructure, moving optics "inside the box"--where optical components and fiber routing is installed directly inside AI servers--creates an opportunity to supply passive photonics, unlocking what Weeks calls a potential "$10 billion market access platform by 2030."
