Ford Motor is set to report its second-quarter earnings after the market closes on Tuesday. Here's what you need to know.

NET INCOME: Analysts polled by FactSet expect the Dearborn, Mich,-based automaker to report a profit of $290 million, compared with a loss of $36 million a year earlier.

ADJUSTED EARNINGS: Ford is expected to have adjusted earnings of 36 cents a share. Last year, the company logged 37 cents a share in adjusted earnings.

REVENUE: Analysts expect $47.24 billion in revenue, compared with $50.18 billion a year earlier.

Shares of Ford were recently up 0.8% at $14.49, having gained 10% this year.

WHAT TO WATCH:

-- Ford on Monday said it is competing with General Motors for a contract to build the U.S. Army's next-generation tactical truck. Ford, GM, and off-road vehicle maker BC Customs all received contracts to build prototypes of the truck, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reported that the ultimate project could represent Ford's biggest military contract since the Cold War.

-- The company also recently agreed to a manufacturing partnership with Chinese automaker Geely Automobile, which will allow the latter company to produce cars at Ford's plant in Valencia, Spain. The companies will also jointly develop a new SUV. The joint venture should help Ford improve utilization at the plant and refresh its European portfolio, Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a recent note, adding that the move is further evidence of Western manufacturers seeking to make deals with Chinese firms.

-- In terms of vehicle sales, Ford had a less-than-stellar quarter and reported a 10% decline earlier this month. The drop was associated with the phaseout of its Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair models, which will make way for a new electric pickup truck. Sport-utility-vehicle sales fell 16%, while truck sales were down 7%. Car sales gained 3.4%. BNP Paribas analysts wrote in a recent note that for Ford to meet its 2026 guidance for unit production following the fires at a Novelis plant last year, the company would need to ramp monthly production to levels it hasn't hit since early 2005, an ambitious target that creates build-quality risks.
