Apple, Amazon, Reddit, Micron, SK Hynix, Roblox, and More Stocks That Explain Today's Market

It's looking like a positive end to a bad month as stocks rose modestly Friday and the tech rebound continued.

Amazon gained 14% after second-quarter earnings and revenue comfortably beat expectations. Investors appeared happy to shrug off the company's increase in capital expenditure for the year -- to $220 billion from $200 billion. Alphabet and Meta Platforms were both punished by the market after hiking capex this earnings season.

Marvell Technology advanced 7.2%. The company helps design Amazon's artificial-intelligence chips. The broader semiconductor sector was also getting a boost Friday.

Intel rose 5.1%, Advanced Micro Devices added 4.2%, and Nvidia was up 1.8%.

Apple's earnings didn't go down so well. The stock fell 9.7% after the company issued an underwhelming forecast alongside its earnings beat late Thursday. The stock is on pace for its largest post-earnings decline since Jan. 24, 2013, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Micron Technology advanced 4.1% after gaining 18% in the previous session. Apple CEO Tim Cook said higher memory costs are expected to continue and only tentatively mentioned the possibility of additional suppliers entering the memory market. Cook notably didn't say Apple was planning to buy hardware from Chinese companies to equip its devices in China.

SK Hynix American depositary receipts rose 4.4%. In South Korea, SK Hynix shares jumped 30% while its peer Samsung Electronics added 27%. Korean retail investors have been piling into SK Hynix and other technology stocks, with increasing use of aggressive tools such as leveraged exchange-traded funds.

Tesla rose 0.9% while SpaceX declined 1%. The Wall Street Journal reported that Tesla was preparing its China business for a possible sale, smoothing the path for a merger with SpaceX. CEO Elon Musk denied the report in a social media post and neither Tesla nor SpaceX responded to requests for comment from Barron's.

Roblox sank 26% as Wall Street responded harshly to the videogame company's quarterly guidance that forecasts declining bookings and slowing revenue growth.

Reddit fell 18%. The social media platform reported better-than-expected quarterly results but investors fear AI chatbots and Google's AI Overviews will cite Reddit and lessen the need for people to click on the site and eventually become logged-in users.

Coinbase Global fell 11% after the cryptocurrency exchange reported a wider-than-expected loss in the second quarter and missed revenue expectations.

Microsoft added 1.8%. Shares jumped 15.5% on Thursday after its earnings -- their biggest daily increase since 2008. The company's $449 billion market cap gain was the largest ever by a U.S. company in a single day.

Moderna declined 0.8% after the drugmaker posted a narrower per-share loss and higher revenue in the second quarter. Moderna also reiterated its full-year guidance of 10% revenue growth, evenly split between U.S. and international sales.

Replimune soared 127% after a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee voted 10-3 in favor of its experimental skin cancer treatment. The biotech company and the FDA have engaged in a heated back-and-forth for many months over the approval of its treatment for advanced melanoma.
