China's rise as a global biotechnology innovation hub has worried the U.S., driving Washington to scrutinize the country's competitiveness and technological leadership rather than scientific advances alone, analytics firm GlobalData said in a Tuesday press release.

The implications of China's emergence extends "beyond healthcare innovation to include pharmaceutical supply-chain resilience, economic competitiveness, and national security," GlobalData healthcare analyst Edita Hamzic said.

GlobalData cited Akeso's (HKG:9926) presentation of its ivonescimab therapy at the American Society of Clinical Oncology as the first drug developed from a China-only clinical trial for non-small cell lung cancer patients as a display of China's scientific progress.

It also cited Wuxi AppTec's (HKG:2359, SHA:603259) inclusion in the U.S. Department of Defense's Section 1260H list of "Chinese military companies" that could affect its eligilibity for future U.S. governemnt contracts.
