Market Chatter: Alphabet's Google DeepMind Disbands AlphaFold Team as AI Strategy Shifts Toward Gemini

Alphabet's (GOOG) Google DeepMind has dismantled the team behind its Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold artificial intelligence system, reassigning most researchers to Gemini-related projects and other scientific initiatives as it shifts its research strategy, the Financial Times reported.

The report said many AlphaFold researchers have moved to projects involving Google's Gemini large language model, enzyme design, nuclear fusion and genomics, while others joined Alphabet's drug discovery unit, Isomorphic Labs.

DeepMind told the Financial Times that the changes reflect a broader strategy of building Gemini-powered systems that can assist scientists and automate parts of scientific research while competing with OpenAI and Anthropic in frontier AI.

According to the report, AlphaFold will continue to be developed despite the restructuring, with its research integrated into DeepMind's broader scientific and artificial intelligence programs rather than managed by a dedicated team.

Google did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
