United Microelectronics (UMC) on Wednesday announced a phased expansion plan to boost semiconductor manufacturing capacity in Singapore and Taiwan amid rising demand driven by AI and edge computing.

The company said it will expand cleanroom capacity at its Singapore Phase 4 facility by about 56,000 square meters and begin construction of a new fab building at its Tainan campus in Taiwan.

UMC said the strategy will help meet near-term customer needs while preparing for future growth, including silicon photonics and advanced packaging technologies.

The company added it will maintain a disciplined approach to capital spending as it executes the projects.
