Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP; TSX: SHOP) reported Q2 2026 revenue of $3.58 billion, up 34% year over year, while GAAP net income increased from $906 million to $1.50 billion. Merchant solutions drove most of the revenue increase, and operating income grew faster than gross profit as expense growth remained comparatively restrained.

Core earnings data

GMV rose 32% as Shopify reported growth across merchant sizes, sales channels, and geographies. Revenue growth was 33% on a constant-currency basis, while gross profit increased 31% and operating income advanced 68%.

Free cash flow and net income excluding the impact of equity investments are non-GAAP measures. Shopify’s reported GAAP net income included substantial gains related to equity investments.

Business and segment performance

Merchant solutions generated approximately 84% of Shopify’s $903 million year-over-year revenue increase. Its 37% growth outpaced both subscription solutions and total company revenue, while monthly recurring revenue continued to expand.

Business metricQ2 2026Q2 2025YoY change
Subscription solutions revenue$802 million$656 million22%
Merchant solutions revenue$2.78 billion$2.02 billion37%
Monthly recurring revenue$221 million$185 millionApprox. 19%

GMV increased 30% in constant currency, compared with reported growth of 32%. Management said the improvement was broad-based across merchant sizes, channels, and geographies, rather than concentrated in a single category.

Profitability, cash flow, and the balance sheet

Gross margin was approximately 47.7%, down from 48.6% a year earlier, as revenue grew faster than gross profit. The faster expansion of merchant solutions relative to subscription solutions coincided with this modest margin compression.

Operating margin nevertheless improved to approximately 13.6% from 10.9%. Total operating expenses increased about 21% to $1.22 billion, slower than gross profit growth of 31%, allowing more gross profit to reach operating income. Transaction and loan losses were an exception, rising from $80 million to $141 million.

Operating cash flow increased to $658 million from $428 million. With only $4 million of capital expenditures, free cash flow reached $654 million and its margin expanded to 18%.

Investors should note a cash-flow presentation change. Beginning in April 2026, Shopify classified cash flows from merchant cash advances as investing rather than operating activities, consistent with its treatment of loans. The change placed a net $37 million cash use in investing activities during the quarter, making the classification relevant when evaluating operating cash flow and free cash flow comparability.

Shopify ended June with $1.66 billion in cash and equivalents and $3.29 billion in marketable securities, for combined liquidity of $4.95 billion. That was down from $5.78 billion at the end of 2025. During Q2, the company spent $1.42 billion repurchasing common stock, while its loans and merchant cash advances balance increased by $400 million from year-end to $2.18 billion.

Equity investment gains amplified GAAP net income

The difference between Shopify’s operating performance and GAAP net income was primarily attributable to investment valuation movements. Net other income, including taxes, was $1.01 billion, compared with $615 million in the prior-year period.

Shopify recorded $1.06 billion of mark-to-market equity investment gains, net of taxes, versus $568 million a year earlier. Excluding this impact, net income was $439 million rather than the reported $1.50 billion. The non-GAAP figure still grew about 30%, but it provides a less investment-sensitive view of the quarter than GAAP net income.

Q3 2026 guidance

Shopify issued a Q3 outlook that supersedes its prior financial guidance, although the release did not provide previous ranges for comparison. The targets point to continued revenue growth above 30%, with gross profit expected to grow more slowly than revenue.

MetricQ3 2026 outlook
Revenue growthLow-thirties percentage rate YoY
Gross profit growthMid-to-high twenties percentage rate YoY
Operating expenses as a share of revenue33% to 34%
Stock-based compensation$150 million
Free cash flow marginHigh-teens to low-twenties

The operating expense range is broadly consistent with Q2’s approximately 34.0% expense ratio. Meanwhile, the free cash flow margin target includes the possibility of maintaining or improving on Q2’s 18% level.

Risks investors should monitor

  • Gross margin pressure: Q2 revenue grew 34%, but gross profit grew 31%, reducing gross margin by approximately 0.9 percentage points. Q3 guidance again calls for gross profit growth below revenue growth.
  • Credit-related exposure: Transaction and loan losses rose to $141 million, while loans and merchant cash advances increased to $2.18 billion. Further growth in losses could offset operating leverage elsewhere.
  • Investment-driven earnings volatility: Equity investment gains accounted for much of reported net income. Changes in third-party valuations can therefore create substantial fluctuations unrelated to Shopify’s operating results.
  • Liquidity and capital allocation: Combined cash and marketable securities declined from year-end as Shopify deployed $1.42 billion for repurchases and expanded merchant financing balances.

Summary

Shopify’s Q2 2026 results combined 34% revenue growth with faster operating income and free cash flow expansion. Merchant solutions supplied most of the incremental revenue, while slower expense growth supported operating leverage despite modest gross-margin compression and higher transaction and loan losses. For Q3, the main points to watch are the gap between revenue and gross profit growth, credit-related costs, and whether the free cash flow margin remains around or above its Q2 level.
