HSBC group CEO George Elhedery has reiterated the global bank's focus on corporate and investment banking, Hong Kong, Singapore and wealth management.\nSpeaking at the bank's 1HFY2026 results briefing, he says there has been no change in HSBC's cross-border account opening activity following China's announcement on outbound investments starting from July 1.  \n\"We welcome the regulatory clarity that has come about in May and June, specifically around State Council Decree 837, which are intended to provide guidelines for outbound investment, but are not meant to discourage or restrict such investment.\n\"When we look at our activity in May and June and for the observations we have for July, our account opening has been broadly unaffected with these additional onboardings,\" Elhedery says.\nHe points to communications from senior officials from both the mainland and Hong Kong where the intent is to continue driving Hong Kong as a leading international financial centre and as a super connector for the Chinese mainland and the world. \"The support they've given to RMB cross-border flows and the support they have been giving to the Connect schemes do indicate this,\" he adds.\nOn July 27, HSBC announced it will establish a new Global AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore by 2H2026 as part of a broader investment to create more than 200 new roles in the country across AI and wealth.\nThe Centre of Excellence is expected to employ 100 AI specialists working alongside teams in wealth management and global payment solutions.\nHSBC also plans to hire a further 100 relationship managers across its premier and private banking segments over the next two years to deepen relationships with affluent to high net worth individuals.\n\"Singapore is also a very important hub in Asia, where we want to be the leading wealth manager in the country as well as for the region and our investment in more relationship managers and wealth centres in Singapore is a testament to that ambition.\n\"We continue to create capacities to invest because we're disposing of non-strategic businesses. Therefore, the wealth management activity in Singapore will be one of the beneficiaries of these investments to accelerate our position in wealth,\" he adds.\n\"Globally, we're seeing people manage wealth on a diversified basis and wealth is flowing between various booking centres looking for different product capabilities, different jurisdictional attractivities, and the trend is one that HSBC can capture because we are present across eight of the world's largest booking centres,\" Elhedery elaborates.\nHe names the eight as Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, Switzerland, the Channel Islands, Luxembourg, the UK, and the US.\nAs of June 30, HSBC had US$1,090 million of AUM, with US$64 billion of net new money in 1H2026, up 31% y-o-y. Of this, Asia net new money grew 32% y-o-y in 1H2026, to US$57 billion.\n\"We are the leading wealth manager in Asia. We are very pleased to see Hong Kong becoming this year the world's leading cross border wealth hub, overtaking Switzerland for that position. Therefore, Hong Kong remains a very important area for us where we invest,\" Elhedery indicates, revealing that HSBC's Hong Kong AUM is around US$500 billion. Following the privatisation of Hang Seng Bank, HSBC has onboarded 640,000 new customers, (up 6% y-o-y).  \nHSBC's other key focus is growing its corporate and investment banking business. Although the US has had record IPOs and M&A activity in 1H2026, Elhedery says HSBC has a pipeline of 70 IPOs of which 40 are in Hong Kong. He also shared that HSBC's trade loans have grown by 30% this year. \"We're benefiting from the new trends such as Asia buying Asia, which is a trend that we're capturing uniquely better than a number of our peers.\"\nOn AI, Elhedery says HSBC will continue investing 'strategically and thoughtfully'.  HSBC will also track the financial benefits and non-financial benefits such as staff productivity improvement. Some of the biggest spending is going towards coding assistance where the bank is making productivity gains of 300% to 400%.\n\"More than 200,000 of our colleagues have been enabled with productivity tools,\" he says. The productivity tools include wealth relationship managers with more than 2,000 of them personalising service to their clients.\n\"We have banker assist tools that allow bankers to do their credit applications for the client at a faster pace and with much higher levels of accuracy. This is now available to multiple thousands of our relationship managers. There are a number of other initiatives going on in fraud and financial crime combating, as well as in contact centre support,\" Elhedery says. \nOn credit costs, Group CFO Pam Kaur says that the bank hasn't seen anything material coming directly from the Middle East, which contributed 2.4% to 1H PBT, and where it has 6% of its assets.\n\"The ECLs there were really immaterial, far lower than US$100 million. The uncertainty impact is that we're holding on to the reserves we built in 1Q relating to the conflict.\"\nThe specific provisions were for defaults in wholesale banking from \"mid-market clients across the globe\". HSBC's total credit costs in 2Q2026 fell to 41 basis points from 52 bps in 1Q. The bank has guided for a 45 bps credit cost in FY2026.\nIn 1H2026, HSBC reported a net profit of US$15.3 billion, up 23% y-o-y, 6% above Bloomberg poll of analysts who estimate US$14.4 billion. HSBC announced a second interim dividend of 10 US cents per share, and a US$1 billion share buyback programme for 3Q2026. As of end-June its NAV was US$9.36.
