Tutor Perini Q2 2026 earnings: Project execution lifts operating income 54%

Tutor Perini (NYSE: TPC) reported Q2 2026 revenue of $1.637 billion, up 19% from $1.374 billion a year earlier, while diluted EPS increased to $1.23 from $0.38. Income from construction operations rose 54% as activity increased on newer large projects and share-based compensation expense declined. The company also raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance.

Core earnings data

Revenue growth extended across all three operating segments, supported by increased execution on projects in New York, California, Hawaii, and the Indo-Pacific region. Gross profit increased more slowly than revenue, but lower general and administrative expenses helped operating income grow substantially faster.

GAAP earnings benefited significantly from lower share-based compensation expense. Adjusted EPS, which excludes that expense net of the associated tax benefit, increased at a more moderate rate.

Business and segment performance

Revenue increased across every segment, with Civil up 11%, Building up 21%, and Specialty Contractors up 47%. Tutor Perini attributed the broad growth primarily to greater activity on newer large projects, including projects with higher-margin contributions.

Backlog was $19.9 billion at June 30, 2026, slightly above its March 31 level after approximately $1.7 billion of new awards and contract adjustments during the quarter. Major additions included $652 million for a Guam military facilities project, $143 million for two military projects in Alaska, and $130 million of additional funding for a Texas healthcare project.

The company also identified a potential project pipeline exceeding $200 billion over the next three to four years. That pipeline represents prospective bidding opportunities rather than contracted backlog, with many projects expected to bid over the next one to two years.

Lower share-based compensation amplified GAAP earnings growth

Gross margin declined to approximately 12.9% from 14.3%, as the 8% increase in gross profit lagged the 19% increase in revenue. However, general and administrative expenses fell to $93.5 million from $119.6 million, allowing income from construction operations margin to rise to approximately 7.2% from 5.6%.

A $27.5 million reduction in share-based compensation expense was a major factor. That expense declined to $27.9 million from $55.4 million and accounted for $0.53 per diluted share after tax in the year-over-year comparison. Consequently, GAAP EPS rose 224%, while adjusted EPS—which removes share-based compensation expense and its related tax effect—increased 23%.

Management expects share-based compensation expense to continue declining relative to 2025 during the remainder of 2026 and to fall more significantly in 2027 as liability-classified awards vest. The expense can nevertheless fluctuate with Tutor Perini’s share price, which is why the company did not provide GAAP EPS guidance.

Cash flow and balance sheet

For the first six months of 2026—not Q2 alone—operating cash flow reached $334.1 million, up 17% from $285.3 million. Tutor Perini attributed the increase to higher project volume, execution, and collections on profitable projects.

Total debt was $396 million at June 30, down 3% from $407 million at the end of 2025. Cash exceeded total debt by $542 million. After the quarter, Tutor Perini completed a refinancing on July 2 that extended maturities, more than doubled its revolving credit facility, and is expected to reduce annual interest expense on its senior notes by approximately $21 million.

During Q2, the company repurchased 137,374 shares for $10 million at an average price of $72.78. It had $170 million remaining under its authorization at quarter-end. The board also increased the quarterly dividend by 50%, from $0.06 to $0.09 per share.

Earnings guidance

Tutor Perini raised both ends of its 2026 adjusted EPS range following its first-half performance. The guidance excludes share-based compensation expense and associated tax effects, as well as certain anticipated pension settlement, debt extinguishment, and refinancing costs.

Management also said it expects 2027 adjusted EPS to be substantially higher than the $5.45 upper end of the updated 2026 range, citing earnings visibility from the current backlog, though it did not provide a formal 2027 range.

Risks investors should monitor

  • Gross-margin pressure: Gross margin declined by approximately 1.4 percentage points even as revenue and gross profit increased. Future results will depend on project mix, cost estimates, and execution.
  • GAAP earnings volatility: Share-based compensation materially affected the year-over-year EPS comparison and remains sensitive to share-price movements. Adjusted guidance also excludes several anticipated non-operating costs.
  • Backlog conversion and project execution: Backlog can be affected by project delays, cancellations, scope reductions, cost revisions, and schedule requirements, potentially changing revenue, margins, and cash flow.
  • Public funding and award timing: A significant portion of current work and future opportunities depends on federal, state, local, and military customers. Funding delays or changes in procurement timing could slow awards and project activity.
  • Collections and contract disputes: Extra work, claims, or unfavorable dispute outcomes could tie up working capital and weaken cash conversion even when reported project activity remains high.

Summary

Tutor Perini’s Q2 2026 results reflected broad segment growth and rising activity on large projects, while lower share-based compensation helped operating income and GAAP EPS grow much faster than revenue. The $19.9 billion backlog and stronger first-half cash generation supported an increase in adjusted EPS guidance. The main issues to watch are whether backlog converts into profitable revenue as planned, whether gross margin stabilizes, and how much GAAP earnings continue to benefit from declining compensation expense.
