Sony (SONY) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) are in talks to invest a total of 1 trillion Japanese yen ($6.31 billion) on a planned image sensor factory in Japan, news outlets reported Monday, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The companies plan to initiate production in 2029 but no time frame was provided for the investments, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The project is meant to provide sensors for AI-powered robots and self-driving cars, the report said.
Sony and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
