The supermarket has run a Disney Ooshies campaign before and has extensive experience with collectable promotions.However, forecasting demand was particularly difficult, even for a retailer with previous Ooshies campaigns to draw on, Tuzovic said.「Forecasting promotional demand for blind-box collectibles is generally volatile and difficult,」 he said.「Woolworths could rely on some historical POS data. But it faces potential supply constraints. These items are produced months in advance in overseas factories with long lead times. The social hype is influenced by several factors that cannot be accurately predicted.」Yet the shortage comes after another recent Woolworths promotion, the Fissler pots and pans campaign, also left customers complaining about stock running out before the promotion ended, frustrating shoppers who had collected points over weeks in the hope of redeeming them for the larger cookware items.This year’s Ooshies campaign has nevertheless been a marketing phenomenon, turning ordinary grocery shopping into a hunt for the Disney characters.The obsession with completing the set taps into something deeper than the value of the figures themselves.「Research shows that incomplete sets create tension and motivate further purchasing to build a collection,」 Tuzovic said.「Rare items feel more special. They create a sense of higher accomplishment when they are found. Some said they could receive five packets and find four were the same character, leaving them with a frustrating pile of duplicates after just one grocery trip. One collector turned her surplus Hei Heis, the chicken from Moana, into a challenge and is now trying to amass 100 of the character.Some shoppers are finding creative ways to use their doubles, turning Ooshies into keyrings, decorating pens and even selling them online through sites such as Etsy.That creative afterlife can be hugely valuable to a brand.「User-generated activity is one of the strongest signs of a successful campaign because it keeps the brand relevant long after the shopping trip is over,」 Tuzovic said.「It extends the campaign from a simple sales promotion into a social and creative experience with viral word of mouth, at no extra cost for the retailer.」Collectors have found creative ways to use duplicate Disney Ooshies, including turning them into pens and keyrings. Credit: FacebookThe scarcity has also fuelled a resale market, with Ooshies appearing on Facebook Marketplace and eBay for everything from a few dollars to around $200 for a complete set, while sellers have advertised supposedly rare figures for thousands.Woolworths has held swap events to help collectors trade duplicates rather than turn to resellers.The growing resale market is another sign of just how much value collectors have placed on the figures.「From a psychological perspective, rare Ooshies become status symbols,」 Tuzovic said.「People are not just buying a toy. They are buying the satisfaction of completing a goal and owning something that feels exclusive. The Ooshies become a tradeable commodity with real market demand and value.」But while the frenzy may be good for engagement, it has left some customers angry that the promotional item disappeared while the campaign was still officially running.Scarcity can be powerful, but there is a point where the excitement tips over into resentment, Tuzovic said.「Controlled scarcity can intensify FOMO. It creates an accelerated sense of urgency that drives more store visits,」 he explained.But when shoppers believe stock was poorly allocated or unfairly scarce, he said the same strategy could be damaging.「Scarcity is a double-edged sword. It can create urgency and social buzz, but if customers believe that stock was poorly allocated or unfairly scarce, it can hurt satisfaction and trust.」He said the backlash could be particularly strong among late-stage shoppers who had changed their spending behaviour but could no longer get the promised collectables, as well as parents facing disappointed children.It is not the first time Woolworths has underestimated the appetite for Ooshies.
