Shares of Bumble slipped a day after the dating app company said it would allow all users, not just women, to send an opening message to someone they have been matched with.

The stock slid 6.7%, to $2.60, midday Wednesday, and has fallen 27% since the start of the year. Shares rose shortly after the announcement on Tuesday.

The change would introduce a more flexible way for connections to begin that reflects member-backed insights on how dating has changed, Bumble said.

About 66% of women surveyed on Bumble said they prefer men to send the first message, the company said.

Chief Executive Whitney Wolfe Herd said the change is an evolution from its founding mission to create a dating app centered around women, not a departure from it.

The change comes as Bumble reported earlier this month that total paying active users declined 16% from the prior year.
