ZIM Q2 2026 Earnings: Higher Freight Rates Lift Revenue, but EBIT Slips

08/19

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (NYSE: ZIM) reported Q2 2026 revenue of $1.78 billion, up 9% from $1.64 billion a year earlier, while diluted EPS rose to $0.53 from $0.19. Higher freight rates and carried volume supported revenue, but reported operating income declined slightly; lower net finance expense and a shift to an income-tax benefit helped net income reach $64 million.

Core Financial Results

The results, released on August 19, 2026, cover the three months ended June 30. ZIM reports under IFRS, while adjusted EBITDA, adjusted EBIT, adjusted net income and free cash flow are non-IFRS measures.

Revenue and gross profit increased, but reported EBIT and cash flow did not follow the same direction. Adjusted net income was $77 million, compared with $24 million a year earlier, after excluding acquisition-related expenses and other adjustments.

Business and Trade-Lane Performance

ZIM carried 922,000 TEUs, up 3%, while its average freight rate increased 8% to $1,590 per TEU. Pacific volume increased by 72,000 TEUs—more than the company-wide increase of 27,000 TEUs—as declines in Cross-Suez, Atlantic and Latin American trades offset much of the Pacific growth.

ZIM operated 115 containerships with 707,000 TEUs of capacity and 13 car carriers, compared with 123 containerships, 767,000 TEUs and 14 car carriers as of its Q2 2025 earnings release. Nine containership charters representing about 35,000 TEUs are scheduled to expire during the rest of 2026, although the company expects overall capacity to remain stable this year.

The company also has charter agreements covering 40 vessels and approximately 286,000 TEUs, mostly newbuild capacity scheduled for delivery through 2028.

Higher Revenue Did Not Produce Higher Reported EBIT

Revenue increased by about $145 million and gross profit rose by $34.2 million. However, general and administrative expenses increased to $107.5 million from $84.2 million, while other operating income declined to $2.5 million from $15.3 million. These items contributed to the $4.9 million decline in reported operating income.

The pending Hapag-Lloyd transaction also affected the comparison. ZIM recorded $25 million of acquisition-related costs in Q2, causing reported EBITDA to fall to $466 million from $472 million while adjusted EBITDA increased to $491 million. Similarly, reported EBIT declined to $144 million, but adjusted EBIT rose to $169 million from $149 million after excluding transaction-related costs.

Net income nevertheless increased substantially because of changes below the operating line. Net finance expense narrowed to $83.6 million from $99.9 million, and income taxes shifted from a $25.6 million expense to a $3.4 million benefit.

Hapag-Lloyd agreed in February 2026 to acquire ZIM for $35.00 per share in cash. Shareholders approved the transaction on April 30, but closing remains subject to regulatory approvals, including approval by the State of Israel under its Golden Share rights. The parties are targeting a fourth-quarter 2026 closing.

Profitability, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet

Operating cash flow declined despite higher quarterly net income. Q2 working capital used $91.5 million, compared with a $42.0 million use a year earlier, as trade and other receivables increased by $266.6 million. A $188.9 million increase in payables and contract liabilities provided a partial offset.

Free cash flow was $386 million after $9 million of net capital expenditures. ZIM ended June with a total cash position of $2.53 billion, nearly unchanged from $2.54 billion at the end of March.

Net debt, which is predominantly associated with lease liabilities after subtracting cash, declined to $2.77 billion from $2.93 billion sequentially. The net leverage ratio improved to 1.6 times from 1.7 times in March, although it remained above the 1.3 times recorded at the end of 2025. Excluding lease liabilities, ZIM reported a net cash position of $2.46 billion.

Full-Year 2026 Guidance

ZIM expects substantially stronger performance in the second half of 2026. The supplied materials do not contain an earlier guidance range, so a change from previous guidance cannot be assessed.

Based on first-half results, the full-year outlook implies a significant sequential increase in both adjusted EBITDA and adjusted EBIT during the second half.

MetricH1 2026 ActualFY 2026 GuidanceApprox. H2 Implied
Adjusted EBITDA$804 million$2.0 billion-$2.4 billion$1.20 billion-$1.60 billion
Adjusted EBIT$164 million$700 million-$1.1 billion$536 million-$936 million

The implied second-half ranges are simple calculations based on the full-year guidance less reported first-half results, rather than separate company guidance. For context, first-half revenue declined to $3.18 billion from $3.64 billion, and ZIM recorded a $22 million net loss for that six-month period.

ZIM also expects to distribute dividends based on 2026 results under its existing policy. Any dividend remains subject to board discretion, Israeli law and restrictions in the Hapag-Lloyd merger agreement.

Recent Insider Transactions

The supplied insider dataset contains four direct sales by officer Dotan Saar during June 2026. Their indicated aggregate value was approximately $1.54 million, but the transactions alone do not establish the insider’s view of the company’s outlook.

June 2, 2026Dotan Saar, OfficerDirect sale$25.09$376,300
June 1, 2026Dotan Saar, OfficerDirect sale$24.63$492,626

The same supplied dataset reports zero sales in its aggregate six-month summary, which conflicts with the individual June records. The aggregate statistic therefore cannot be treated as reconciled with the transaction-level data.

Risks Investors Need to Monitor

  • Freight-rate sensitivity: Q2 benefited from an 8% increase in average freight rates, but first-half rates declined to $1,455 per TEU from $1,632. A reversal in favorable Q2 pricing could affect revenue and profitability.
  • Dependence on second-half acceleration: The full-year guidance implies second-half adjusted EBITDA and EBIT well above their respective first-half levels, increasing the importance of market conditions and execution during the remainder of 2026.
  • Operating-cost and cash-conversion pressure: Reported EBIT declined despite revenue growth, while higher receivables contributed to lower operating cash flow.
  • Merger closing uncertainty: The Hapag-Lloyd transaction still requires regulatory approvals. It has already generated acquisition-related costs and also places restrictions on potential dividends.
  • Lease and fleet commitments: Net debt remains predominantly lease-related, while ZIM is balancing charter expirations with commitments for 40 additional vessels through 2028.

Summary

ZIM’s Q2 revenue improvement was driven by higher freight rates and Pacific trade volumes, but rising overhead, lower other operating income and transaction costs prevented reported EBIT from increasing. Lower net finance expense and a tax benefit supported net income, while working-capital movements reduced cash generation. The main issues ahead are whether ZIM can deliver the much stronger second half embedded in its guidance and secure the remaining approvals for the Hapag-Lloyd transaction.
