Algoma Steel Group has suspended its electric furnace operations following an unplanned outage at its generating facility.

The Canadian producer of steel plate and hot-rolled sheet products said Monday that it has suspended production at its electric arc furnaces which are supplied by the Lake Superior Power.

The shutdown was triggered when an abnormal condition took one of the power plant's turbine units offline. The others weren't affected.

Algoma said it is working with equipment partner GE Vernova to commission a spare turbine onsite within 21 days. It is also negotiating grid-power access with Ontario's electricity operator to resume furnace operations in as few as 10 days.

To reduce downtime, Algoma said it is bringing forward previously scheduled maintenance work.

Based on current inventory and order positions, the company doesn't expect a significant impact on its ability to meet its delivery dates, but noted that it expects future shipment volumes to be affected by the outage.
