Brazil's data protection regulator imposed a fine of 153.8 million reais against TikTok's parent, ByteDance, over alleged irregularities in the processing of children's and adolescents' data, the regulator said in a Tuesday press release.

In the regulator's technical note, the Agência Nacional de Proteção de Dados, or ANPD, found that TikTok was able to collect data from minors without requiring them to declare age or to read the terms of services.

The ANPD ordered the social media company to comply with the regulator's recommendations within 10 business days, including setting up an age verification mechanism and deleting existing data of users verified to be children.
