Dow Falls Over 100 Points; US Economy Adds 162,000 Jobs In August

U.S. stocks traded mixed this morning, with the Dow Jones index falling over 100 points on Friday.

Following the market opening Friday, the Dow traded down 0.24% to 53,559.76 while the NASDAQ gained 0.04% to 26,595.11. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.08% to 7,741.67.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Information technology shares jumped by 0.7% on Friday.

In trading on Friday, energy stocks fell by 1.5%.

Top Headline

The U.S. economy created 162,000 jobs in August, sharply beating estimates of 56,000 and pointing to strengthening labor market conditions.

The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, matching expectations. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% month-over-month, matching forecasts, taking the annual pace to 3.1% from 3.2% in July.

Equities Trading UP           

  • Immuron Ltd – ADR (NASDAQ:IMRN) shares shot up 63% to $1.81 after the company announced an exclusive US distribution agreement for PROIBS with Calmino group.
  • Shares of CDT Environmental Technology (NASDAQ:CDTG) got a boost, surging 46% to $1.31.
  • American Outdoor Brands Inc (NASDAQ:AOUT) shares were also up, gaining 39% to $13.90 after the company announced better-than-expected first-quarter fiscal 2027 results.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • Intercont (Cayman) Ltd (NASDAQ:NCT) shares dropped 48% to $0.27.
  • Shares of Turbogen Ltd (NASDAQ:TRBG) were down 41% to $7.04.
  • BioXcel Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BTAI) was down, falling 24% to $0.090.

CommoditiesIn commodity news, oil traded down 2.6% to $88.96 while gold traded down 1.8% at $4,460.50.

Silver traded down 2.1% to $66.270 on Friday, while copper rose 0.1% to $6.6715.

Euro zone

European shares were mixed today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 rose 0.1%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 Index rose 0.3%, London’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.1%, Germany’s DAX gained 0.5%, while France’s CAC 40 fell 0.1%.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed mostly higher on Friday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 1.26%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index jumping 1.74%, China’s Shanghai Composite falling 0.30% and India’s BSE Sensex gaining 0.48%.
