BOJ Signals Lift Yen but Hawkish Fed Expectations Counter

1046 GMT - The yen got a little lift from BOJ hawk Takata's comments, but a hawkish Fed is a game-changer that suggests the currency can spend much longer in the 160-162 area against the dollar, says ING's Chris Turner. The implication that the BOJ could hike by 50 bps or deliver back-to-back increases sounds positive for the yen, though Turner notes that Takata is in the minority hawk camp and his comments shouldn't be particularly surprising. A September hike would already represent quicker tightening, and ING suspects the BOJ would prefer to wait until 2027 to see how domestic consumption performs. Turner reckons Treasury Secretary Bessent won't be particularly happy with the hawkish Fed working against the yen, but will appreciate the benefits of Fed independence.
