Japan's artificial intelligence data center capacity is projected to surge to 4.9 gigawatts by 2033 from 1.1 GW at the end of 2025, backed by an estimated $60 billion in infrastructure construction investments, Nikkei Asia reported Saturday.

A survey of 26 data center operators revealed that 22 companies are planning new facilities to meet surging computing demand, the report said.

The estimated construction value is based on the Japan average construction cost of $16 billion per gigawatt, according to the report.

Total investment, including chips and hardware, is expected to reach "hundreds of billions of dollars," according to the report.
