TSMC Posts Record Sales. Why AMD and Other Chip Stocks are Falling

The AI trade has run out of gas lately, and shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. were summing up investors' fatigue on Thursday.

The Taiwanese chip manufacturer's American depositary receipts slipped 0.5% ahead of the opening bell. The selloff came even after TSMC posted record-breaking net revenue for August, with sales soaring 53% from a year ago to 514.8 billion New Taiwan dollars ($16.3 billion).

It's no surprise that the stock barely reacted. Investors have gotten used to eye-popping sales numbers from TSMC as the AI boom drives up demand for its chips.

Global semiconductor foundry revenue jumped to $53.5 billion in the second quarter, market intelligence provider TrendForce said on Wednesday in a research report, with TSMC accounting for 75% of that.

That dominant market share-and record revenue-gives TSMC significant pricing power, which doesn't bode well for the customers that rely on the company for chip manufacturing and packaging.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Nvidia were sliding on Thursday, suggesting that the monthly sales figure had failed to revive the broader AI trade.

The big worry now for those semiconductor designers is that TSMC could be about to raise its prices.

The chip manufacturer plans to raise prices by up to 10% from next year, Reuters reported in July, citing two sources familiar with the matter. TSMC didn't immediately reply to a request for comment from Barron's.
