Fortescue (ASX:FMG) appealed a Federal Court decision that awarded AU$150 million in compensation to Aboriginal people in Western Australia after the company built mines on their land without a prior agreement, The Australian reported Wednesday, citing a Fortescue spokesman.

With its own appeal filing on Tuesday, the company joins the Western Australian state government, which is also challenging the ruling with claims that the amount of the award to the Yindjibarndi native people was too high, according to the report.

Fortescue and the Yindjibarndi did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
