Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po has urged carrier Cathay Pacific Airways (HKG:0293) to expand its footprint and offer attractive fares as the region remains a key aviation hub under China's national development plan, according to a Tuesday report by the South China Morning Post.

The report said Chan pointed out that the government was seeking new connectivity arrangements in the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa and South America following successful capacity growth at Hong Kong International Airport with a three-runway system, and suggested Cathay capitalize on the opportunities.

Chan, who was speaking at a Cathay event, reportedly stressed that adding a new route would increase trade, attract investment, and boost economic opportunities in Hong Kong. He also praised the airline's HK$150 billion investment plan, which he sees as a strong sign of confidence in the region's future.
