Applied Materials has pledged a $5 billion investment in India spanning 10 years to strengthen its presence in the country, according to a Thursday Reuters report citing the company.

The report said the U.S. semiconductor equipment maker announced the plans at the country's top chip event, SEMICON India. The investment will be focused on R&D, ramping up supply chain capabilities, and hiring talent.

The investment announcement comes as the semiconductor industry grapples with a global surge in chip demand, fueled by AI infrastructure buildout for compute capacity and geopolitical tensions, the report said.
