President Donald Trump posted on X on September 16, calling for U.S. interest rates to be 1% or lower, arguing that the country has the best credit in the world, "BY FAR." He claimed the nation is "BOOMING with new Investment" and that if the U.S. stopped trading with every country it has a deficit with—which is most of them—it would make at least $1.5 trillion a year. Trump dismissed the term "deficit" as "nothing more than a fancy word for LOSS," and asserted that the U.S. is "carrying" almost every country in the world, a situation he says cannot continue. He concluded the post with an urgent demand: "LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!"

The president's remarks reflect his long-standing criticism of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. The current federal funds rate target range stands at 5.25% to 5.5%.
