Investors appeared disgruntled over Instacart's growing tech footprint.

Maplebear stock fell Wednesday, the day after the company said Instacart's grocery ordering system will be connected to Meta's artificial-intelligence agent Muse.

Shares of the grocery-ordering company slid 2.1% to $43.38, while Meta Platforms stock rose 1% Wednesday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, in comparison, was down 1.2%.

Instacart users can now chat with Muse and turn that conversation into a grocery order, without having to leave the Muse app or build a cart manually, Maplebear said Tuesday. Its latest partnership is tailored to resolve online grocery shopping that has become "surprisingly complicated," according to the company.

Maplebear separately announced partnerships with Airbnb and GoPuff, a delivery service that operates from its own fulfillment centers, on Tuesday. Instacart is now integrated into Airbnb's app across the U.S. and Canada, allowing users to order groceries without setting up a new Instacart account, and GoPuff will join Instacart's marketplace.

GoPuff will also use Instacart's advertising technology as part of the partnership, Maplebear said.

Instacart has increasingly leaned into AI capabilities over the past year. The company announced a partnership with OpenAI in December, saying users could shop within a conversation with ChatGPT.

Chief Technology Officer Anirban Kundu said at the time the partnership would redefine "what's possible in AI-powered shopping."

Instacart was integrated in Anthropic's Claude and in Alphabet's Gemini this past spring.

Wall Street has become bullish on Meta's Muse. J.P. Morgan said Tuesday the AI application could become more widely used that OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Other companies, including PayPal and Shopify, have announced partnerships to feature their products through Meta's AI agent in recent days.
