Japanese energy firm JERA has floated a roughly $2 billion plan to supply liquefied natural gas power to Hawaii, which currently depends heavily on crude oil for electricity, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday.

The proposal covers an LNG import terminal, an underwater pipeline to Oahu, and a 500-megawatt gas-fired power plant, with operations targeted around 2030, the news daily said.

Fuel would come from Australia or Canada, be regasified at a floating terminal near Oahu, and piped ashore. JERA estimates about $1.5 billion for the plant and $500 million for the terminal and pipeline, and is discussing a joint venture with local partners, the report said.

JERA Americas did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
