Oil, Bond, AI Outlooks Damp Wall Street Pre-Bell; Asia Off, Europe Up

Wall Street futures pointed lower pre-bell Monday on rising crude prices and bond yields, and after artificial intelligence developer OpenAI said it was pausing training of its latest models amid reports of AI agents going rogue.

In the futures, the S&P 500 fell 0.5%, the Nasdaq declined 1% and the Dow Jones was off 0.5%.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures traded up 4.2% at $96.42 a barrel, and 10-year US Treasuries offered 5.23%, testing 20-year highs, in morning action.

Global petroleum prices lifted after President Donald Trump over the weekend appeared to rule out negotiations with Tehran regarding hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz.

The VanEck Semiconductor fund (SMH) traded down 1.5% pre-bell.

In economic news, traders this week look forward to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for August, or JOLTS, on Tuesday, and the national employment situation bulletin for September on Friday, for clues to how labor markets are holding up under higher energy prices.

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures core index, for August, posts on Wednesday in Washington.

Asian exchanges traded mostly lower overnight on soft tech shares, while European bourses tracked marginally north midday on the continent.

On the economic calendar is the Dallas Fed manufacturing survey for September at 10:30 am ET.

In premarket action, Bitcoin traded at $82,787, while spot gold commanded $4,157 an ounce.
