Korea Electric Power's Financial Position May Limit U.S. Nuclear-Project Investment

0425 GMT - Korea Electric Power's weak financial position could limit its ability to invest in joint nuclear-energy projects with Westinghouse Electric being discussed as part of a U.S.-South Korean investment deal, say Nomura analysts Cindy Park and Dongmin Lee. "If Korean nuclear plants are built in the U.S. and Korea decides to take a stake in Westinghouse, we see low chances of KEPCO providing large capital for these deals due to the weak financial structure," the analysts write in a note. The state utility, known as KEPCO, has temporarily raised its bond-issuance ceiling but is scheduled to lower the cap after 2027, they say. The lower cap would limit the company's bond issuance to 65 trillion won, compared with about 70 trillion won of bonds outstanding as of 2Q 2026, they add.
