Stock futures begin trading later on Sunday ahead of a new week that includes earnings reports from the biggest U.S. banks.

On Tuesday, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Wells Fargo report their third quarter results, while Bank of America and Morgan Stanley report on Wednesday. Investors will be listening to what top bank CEOs say about the economy and consumer spending heading into the final months of the year.

All three major stock indexes ended last week higher as a relentless bull market driven by AI spending enters its fourth year this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.9% in the largest one-week point and percentage gain since the week ending August 7. The Dow is up 7.5% so far this year.

The S&P 500 index closed up 1.2% on Friday, at 7811.54, notching its second highest close in history, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The S&P 500 is up 14.1% this year.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ended the week up 0.6%, notching its fourth consecutive weekly gain and its largest four-week percentage gain since the week ending Aug. 28. The Nasdaq Composite is up 17.7% year to date.

Energy markets are still very much on investors' minds after President Donald Trump's decision to import Russian diesel to the U.S., as well as the "energy ceasefire" he declared was "effective immediately" between Ukraine and Russia on Sunday.

Trump said Friday that he was lifting sanctions on Russia, and on Saturday said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should stop attacking Russian oil refineries, whose oil exports help fund Russia's war in Ukraine.

Zelensky responded on X that "It is possible to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as early as today, but [Russia's President Vladimir] Putin does not want to do so," adding that "Ukraine will be ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Russia stops striking our energy infrastructure."

Zelensky also said that Trump's "energy ceasefire," which Trump said both parties had agreed to, was news to him, but that "if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire Ukraine will agree" as well.

The White House, when asked for more details on the agreement, directed Barron's back to Trump's post on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina told NBC's Meet the Press with Kristen Welker that Trump's deal to import Russian diesel could be illegal and has "deadly consequences."

"Giving Vladimir Putin any sense that we're going to put our foot on the brakes versus put our foot on the accelerator to ending this war and ensuring peace in Europe, we've got to go back," Tillis said. "We were very clear that Russia is the aggressor," in the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014.

AAA on Sunday reported that the average price of diesel is $6.28 a gallon, up from $6.06 a gallon last month, and $3.67 a gallon a year ago.

The national average for gasoline is $4.359 a gallon on Sunday, up from $4.295 a gallon a month ago, and $3.090 a gallon a year ago.
