American Airlines (AAL) will stop the practice of involuntarily bumping passengers from overbooked flights, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden.

The airline accounted for 60% of passengers involuntarily denied boarding last year, according to the report.

Garboden said American Airlines made technology and process improvements, and now they do not have involuntary denied boardings, the Journal said, citing a report by View From the Wing.

The airline has also instructed gate agents to begin seeking volunteers earlier and explain compensation options upfront, the report said. American notified employees that eliminating involuntary bumping is a requirement rather than a goal, according to the report.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
