Citigroup's profit jumped 40% in its third quarter, beating expectations on strong revenue growth.
-- Total profit hit $5.25 billion, or $2.85 a share.
-- Revenue rose 8% to $23.85 billion, its best third quarter in a decade.
-- Analysts had expected the bank to post earnings of $2.65 per share on revenue of $23.72 billion.
-- The quarterly growth is extra high because a year ago the bank took a goodwill charge on the plans to shed its Mexican bank Banamex.
