O-I Glass (OI) said Tuesday it successfully completed a trial at its Harlow, UK, facility, replacing natural gas with 100% biofuel in the glassmaking process.
The trial combined biofuel with cullet preheating and an oxy-fuel furnace, resulting in a significant drop in carbon emissions, the company said.
O-I added the test confirmed biofuel's potential for large-scale use, though its adoption will depend on fuel availability and cost.
Shares of the company were up 1.3% in recent Tuesday premarket activity.
