President Trump's reciprocal tariffs will go into place at midnight Wednesday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told lawmakers, though he said talks continue with many nations to potentially reduce the tariffs in the future. "We will have the tariffs in place," he said during a Senate Finance Committee hearing Tuesday, "and if other countries can come to an agreement on reciprocal trade that's something the president can consider."
Greer also outlined negotiations with Japan to reduce tariffs and other market barriers. The U.S. will aim for more market access, Greer said, including on agricultural goods and eliminating certain "structural impediments" to U.S. industrial goods like regulations and standards. The U.S. would also seek alignment on export controls and potential commitments to purchase American energy products like liquefied natural gas.
