Contemporary Amperex Technology (SHE:300750), or CATL, will begin mass-producing its Naxtra sodium-ion battery packs by the end of 2025, offering electric vehicles up to 500 kilometers per charge, The South China Morning Post reported Monday.

The battery pack cuts reliance on costly lithium and cobalt while matching lithium iron phosphate batteries in energy density, according to the report.

The sodium-ion battery has an energy storage density of 175 watt-hours per kilogram, the SCMP wrote. This compares with lithium iron phosphate batteries' 185 watt-hours per kilogram, currently used in most Chinese-made EVs.
