Boeing-built (BA) Space Launch System rocket and Lockheed Martin's (LMT) Orion crew capsule could be shelved as US President Donald Trump's proposed budget for next year pushes for cost reductions at many of the programs of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

"The Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule will be retired after Artemis III, paving the way for more cost-effective, next-generation commercial systems that will support subsequent NASA lunar missions," the space agency said Friday.

The White House's 2026 budget proposal for NASA amounted to $18.8 billion, versus a funding of $24.8 billion received for fiscal year 2025, the Office of Management and Budget showed Friday.

Boeing and Lockheed did not immediately reply to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
