Down on Sydney’s Macquarie Street at the Federal Court, Justice Michael Lee is advancing quite a case: that it might be he, not ASIC’s Joe Longo or the ACCC’s Gina Cass-Gottlieb or APRA’s John Lonsdale, that’s the true corporate cop of Australia.
This week, Lee has been running a hearing to decide Qantas’ penalty for its illegal sacking of 1820 workers in 2020. The airline has already agreed to $120 million in compensation for the suffering they caused staff. The question remains on what it should be fined for the lawbreaking itself.
