特斯拉的自动驾驶主管最近承认，该公司的自动驾驶项目比谷歌旗下的Waymo落后了“几年”，但他相信，成本优势将使其能够更快地扩大规模。

　　在一次罕见的坦诚采访中，特斯拉人工智能和自动驾驶主管阿肖克·埃卢斯瓦米（Ashok Elluswamy）承认，特斯拉在自动驾驶领域落后Waymo几年。

　　当被问及特斯拉和Waymo在自动驾驶方面的区别时，埃卢斯瓦米表示，特斯拉的方法要便宜得多。主持人问他的意思是不是说更便宜但“质量一样”，这位特斯拉副总裁回答说：“同等质量。从技术上讲，Waymo已经在运营了。我们可能落后了几年。”

　　这对任何密切关注特斯拉的人来说都应该是显而易见的，因为特斯拉还没有能力做到Waymo多年来一直在做的事情：为客户提供4级自动驾驶服务。

　　特斯拉目前仅限于二级高级驾驶辅助系统（ADAS），该系统需要驾驶员的持续监督。尽管如此，特斯拉很少承认这一点，因为其CEO埃隆·马斯克多年来一直在贬低Waymo的成就，并声称他没有看到任何人在自动驾驶方面接近特斯拉。

　　特斯拉的汽车确实比Waymo的便宜得多，但这有很多原因。汽车成本的真正差异在于，特斯拉每年生产100多万辆汽车，从规模经济中受益，而Waymo现在只生产几百辆，很快就会生产几千辆。Waymo还从其他制造商那里购买无人驾驶汽车，并将其传感器套件和硬件简单地集成在一起。
