Agentic AI is expected to change the internet for good, and BofA Securities has identified a few companies it believes are set to reap the benefits.
Generative AI has taken the world by storm as chatbots grow in popularity, bringing more specific and conversational answers to questions. Customer agents are having more humanlike conversations with users, and workers are getting assistance in writing emails and other documents.
Tech experts foresee yet more change, saying agentic AI could be the next big thing. While gen AI generates content from users' prompts, AI agents are meant to go beyond, taking action on their behalf. This could include filling out spreadsheets or helping complete code for workers, or even making shopping and travel decisions.
"Agentic AI is game-changing," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on the company's last earnings call in May. "Agents can understand ambiguous and rather implicit instructions and able to problem solve and use tools and have memory and so on."
BofA Security analyst Justin Post also sees a major shift in the way the internet is used as AI agents become more successful and popular. He wrote in a research note Tuesday that "Agentic AI will lead to a major evolution of Consumer Internet user behavior."
Post sees several stocks that can benefit. He wrote that he expects the way people shop online to change as AI agents interact with them. Instead of people browsing multiple websites, "consumers will receive personalized recommendations that factor the best pricing, shipping, and payment outcomes, which saves time and reduces purchase friction," he said.
"As AI Engines will be more 'aware', we think the value of differentiated pricing, selection and shipping speeds will only increase, favoring Amazon. Also, Amazon has Prime lock-in, and is building a 1-stop shopping agent that can buy from other sites," Post wrote.
On top of Amazon's potential benefits in the e-commerce space, Post believes that the online travel company Booking Holdings is positioned to do well.
"Agentic AI is expected to function as a personal travel agent that handles everything from trip planning to booking, and potentially on-trip assistance," he wrote. "Gen-AI chatbots can enhance travel planning, but Agentic AI will go further, making personalized booking decisions and automating the booking process."
Booking is the best positioned to benefit because agentic AI companies such as Operator will rely on online travel agents "and their vast data and inventory to facilitate the booking process," he said.
