Elme Communities shares were higher after the real estate company disclosed a liquidation plan and detailed the expected shareholder proceeds.

The stock rose 8% to $16.35 Monday and is up about 7% this year.

Elme said it agreed to sell a 19-asset portfolio to Cortland Partners for $1.6 billion and expects to pay a special distribution between $14.50 and $14.82 a share after closing the sale.

The company expects additional liquidating distributions of about $2.90 to $3.50 a share. Including a regular quarterly distribution of 18 cents a share to be paid Oct. 3, it expects total payments of $17.58 to $18.50 a share.

In February, the company said it would evaluate strategic alternatives in an effort to maximize shareholder value. It said shares continued to trade at a discount to indications of value in the private market.
