Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Wednesday Amid Wave of Corporate Earnings

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.3% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.2% higher in Wednesday's premarket activity amid the continuing wave of corporate earnings.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

US mortgage applications rose 3.1% in the week ended Aug. 1 as a drop in rates led to gains in both refinancing and purchase activity, Mortgage Bankers Association data showed Wednesday.

The weekly EIA petroleum status report will be released at 10:30 am ET.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, Boston Fed President Susan Collins and San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly speak on Wednesday.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 0.5%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.5% higher, Ether ETF (EETH) gained 1.5%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was flat.

Power Play:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.2%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.2% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) advanced 0.4%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell by 0.5%.

Shopify (SHOP) shares were up more than 15% in recent premarket activity after the company reported higher Q2 non-GAAP earnings and revenue.

Winners and Losers:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0.5%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was flat. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) gained 0.6%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.5% higher.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) shares were down more than 9% pre-bell after the company said it expects revenue growth of nearly 3% to 4%, compared with its prior outlook of about 4%.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.8%.

Enlight Renewable Energy (ENLT) stock was up more than 3% before Wednesday's opening bell after the company lifted its 2025 revenue guidance.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.2%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) gained 0.2% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was flat.

Novo Nordisk (NVO) stock was down more than 2% premarket after the company cut its 2025 sales growth guidance.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) advanced 0.6% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive.

Louisiana-Pacific (LPX) stock was down more than 2% before the opening bell after the company reported lower Q2 adjusted earnings and net sales.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 1%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 1.1% lower.

Itau Unibanco (ITUB) shares were up more than 1% pre-bell Wednesday after the company reported higher Q2 net income and operating revenue.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up 1.5% at $66.14 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 1.1% to $2.98 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) was 1.6% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was flat.

Gold futures for December retreated 0.4% to $3,419.90 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures were up 0.1% at $37.87 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) declined by 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.03% higher.
