A tropical depression or storm is likely to form over the Caribbean Sea in the next few days when conditions are expected to be more favorable for development, the National Hurricane Center said early Monday.

NHC said in an 8 a.m. update that a tropical wave located over the eastern Caribbean is producing a concentrated area of showers and thunderstorms. The system is moving westward at 15-20 mph towards the central Caribbean Sea and is expected to slow down over the next few days, it said.

The government forecaster said environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for development over the next few days, when the system is likely to become a tropical depression or storm.

The agency said there is a 50% chance that the system will become a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours, and an 80% chance that it will become one in the next 7 days.

Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are subsiding for the Windward and Leeward Islands Monday morning, but could begin over portions of the ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao during the next couple of days, NHC said.
