Duolingo's Growing Chess Dependence Makes Acquisition Necessary -- Market Talk

1225 ET - Duolingo is increasingly relying on its chess offerings to grow users. In order to retain those users, it may have to acquire Chess.com, says D.A. Davidson analyst Wyatt Swanson. Chess is supplying a large portion of Duolingo's user growth with language growth lackluster, Swanson says. But users learning chess on Duolingo are likely to move to Chess.com's player vs. player platform once they learn the game. "We ultimately doubt the long-term potential for Duolingo's chess offering without building an adequate PvP platform that can compete with the likes of Chess.com and frankly, we don't think that is possible," Swanson says.
